Taphole Clay Composition Factors -- design according to Blast Furnace

To keep the tap hole under steady operation, taphole clay should have volume stability and good workability, easy sintering and open-up, good molten iron and slag resistance, good thermal shock resistance.Anhydrous taphole caly is very polular due to its better performance.

Here are the composition factors of taphole clay:


Binding Agent
Tar and modified resin are the main binding agent for anhydrous taphole clay,which also add plasticity to taphole clay.During sintering, taphole clay is carbon-boned thanks to carbonization of tar and modified resin.This improve the strength of taphole clay and assure the tapping time.

Bitumen
Melting of bitumen can fill up the joint of taphole clay when operation.Thus increase the adhension of taphole clay. Meanwhile, carbonization of bitumen will also increase high temperature performance of taphole clay. Appropriate additon of bitumen can increase the strength of taphole clay significantly.While over addition will cause coking and reduce the strength of taphole clay.

Coke
Coke as part of  aggregate of taphole clay can prevent it from over sintering and improve the resistance to hot metal and slag. Too many coke will increase the apparent porosity and low down the strength. On the contrary, taphole clay has bad air permeability, which will induce humid taphole clay.

Above all, to have a good product and achieve good performance, we must learn the real blast furnace operation very well and product should be designed according to the real requirements.

Tap hole clay for blast furnace operation

The performance of taphole clay( taphole mud or taphole gun mass) always affect operation of blast furnace a lot.

Damage for taphole clay

1. mechannical force and thermal shock
When drilling to open the tap hole, hot metal and slag run out from taphole channel, and expose taphole clay under 1500℃. During the plugging operation, the temperature will drop to 200℃ repidly. Under such repeat, thermal stree is generated in the old tap hole clay package, which will cause crack in the tap hole. In addition, during the sitering process of new tap hole clay, it is easy to incur some joints between the contact surface and lead the hot metal into the joints. When next time to open the tap hole, it is easier for hot metal flow to erode the taphole clay package.

2.Chemical Erosion
When taphole clay contacted with melton iron or slag, it is evry easy to induce some chemical reactions. In this way, taphole clay also be eroded. And the taphole channel will be expanded, hot metal flow will rush out from taphole and bring tap hole with instability.

3.Tapping Times
Appropiate less tapping times is good for tap hole maintenance. The taphole clay package can be sentirely intered  and form a strong package. So that, humid tap hole and shallow tap hole less happens.

4.Tapping Method
Anhydrous taphole clay has good strength. We use alloy drill bit to open tap hole and sometimes with oxygen for lancing of tap hole. Unsteady taphole diameter and oxidization  to taphole clay will reduce the stability of tap hole.
